Saudi Arabia joined the World Intellectual Property Organization's PLT and PCT Patent Treaties. The purpose of the PLT is to simplify and harmonize the formal requirements of national or regional patent applications, the maintenance of patents, and other requirements related to patents or patent applications as prescribed by national or regional patent offices.

WorldIntellectual PropertyThe Director General of WIPO has informed the Minister for Foreign Affairs that the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has deposited its accession to 《Patent(PLT)(adopted in Geneva on 1 June 2000) and accession to 《PatentTreaty on Cooperation (PCT)(done at Washington on 19 June 1970 and amended on 28 September 1979, 3 February 1984 and 3 October 2001).

According to WIPO, KSA's accession to the PLT Treaty will enter into force on August 3, 2013, and its accession to the PCT will also enter into force on August 3, 2013.

The purpose of the PLT is to simplify and harmonize the formal requirements of national or regional patent applications, the maintenance of patents and other additional requirements related to patents or patent applications, such as communications, statements or changes in records related to patents and patent applications, as prescribed by national or regional patent offices. By filing an "international" patent application, the PCT makes it possible to obtain patent protection for inventions in many member states at the same time. Any national or resident of each Contracting State may be able to submit such an application. The applicant (a citizen or resident of a Contracting State) may generally file an application in the national patent office of the Contracting State or, at the option of filing an application with the WIPO International Bureau in Geneva.
